Chlorine Dioxide to Register Significant Growth    
Chlorine dioxide is widely used in modern pulp bleaching. It is produced from sodium chlorate at the site, in most cases. It functions via oxidative reactions, thus preventing the formation of chlorinated organic compounds. Its working mechanism provides superior strength to the pulp, as compared to other oxidants. In addition, it is the most preferred bleaching agent for the elemental chlorine-free (ECF) chemical pulp bleaching process, which has a strong demand, as it offers the highest product quality and causes the least amount of pollution among all oxidants.

Increasing Recycling of Paper Driving the Market  
According to industry data, a paper can be recycled about three to five times, on an average. There are a significant number of paper mills and other established paper companies that are now recycling waste paper. Over time, the number of companies and volume of recycled paper has been increasing at significant rate. The increasing paper recycling is driving the demand for pulp and paper chemicals, as most of the companies rely on it. In the United States, about 70% of paper mills rely on recycled paper fiber, to produce their products at less cost and by save energy. In 2016, in the United States, about 69 % of paper products used were made from recycled paper. In China, more than 50% of the paper products are from recycled paper.

Paper industry on the upswing  
The country's paper industry has been on a positive growth trajectory as the demand for paper rising on both the local and international markets, insiders said. Only a few years back, imported paper met a large portion of domestic demand, but now the market share and the capacity of local manufacturers has grown significantly, they observed.
The number of paper mills has now increased to over 80 from around 50 five years ago, while 15 or 20 more units are set to go into operation soon, sources said. The industry, which is churning out around 1.5 million tonnes of paper a year, has generated 1.0 million direct and indirect employments.

Andritz pulp drying plant achieves new world record at upm’s kymi mill, finland

The ANDRITZ pulp drying plant installed at UPM’s Kymi mill in Kouvola, Finland, achieved a new record production capacity of 2,452 tons per day on May 31, 2018. In terms of specific drying capacity, this equals 389.2 tons per day and meter of working width on the 6.3 meter wide sheet drying machine, which is a new world record for drying of bleached birch and pine kraft. The mill was started up successfully in 2015 and has achieved several production records since then

Genus Paper & Boards Limited has entered into two non-binding Memorandums of Understanding (MOU), as follows: 
 
(a) A non-binding MOU with the Government of Maharashtra (GOM) to invest Rs.1050 crores for setting up of Kraft Paper manufacturing plant, and 
 
(b) A non-binding MOU with the Government of Uttar Pradesh to invest Rs. 600 crores for expansion of the current manufacturing facility.
 
The company will incur the investing amount within a period of 5 years from the date of application to the Directorate of Industries / relevant authorities after completion of all effective steps .

GST, imports dampen paper manufacturing

Paper manufacturers are glad to have gotten past the second quarter, a lean season normally, but aggravated by the demands of a shift to a new tax regime, GST. The industry is also seeing significant imports of copier paper and maplitho, a major concern for the domestic industry, in addition to coated paper, a segment that is traditionally import-dependent. But towards the second half of September, the domestic trade has started settling down to the new tax regime and enquiries from bulk consumers have started ahead of the diary and calendar season.

Making of Paper

Pulp is a mature industry, which uses trees to derive raw materials. A tree used in production of pulp has 25% as branches and 75% as trunk wood or logs). A wood log has 27% lignin (glue) and 73% fiber (that goes into paper). Every tree requires 130 gallons of water for growth and 50 gallons of water for being processed into paper. In an average 17 trees are required to produce one metric ton of paper. The production of white office paper requires around 24 trees and newsprint requires around 12 trees along with 25 metric cubes of water, 10,061 kWh of electricity, and 680 gallons of oil.

Origin of chemical wood pulp

Chemical wood pulp is a lignocellulosic fibrous material, which is produced by separating cellulose fibers from wood. Softwood fibers are fibers generated from angiosperm trees. These trees have naked seeds that have flowers. They have long fibers without any pores and are 3 mm and 410 microns in length and breadth, respectively. This separates lignin from fibers. Hardwood comes from deciduous trees and has libriform fibers. They are 1 mm and 20 micrometers in length and breadth, respectively.

In a major blow to corrugated box manufacturers, prices of kraft paper have risen by 23 per cent over the past three months due to short supply, following intermittent closure of production units. Trade sources said that kraft paper prices are likely to have surged the highest in any quarter. Trading currently at Rs 31 a kg, kraft paper prices have risen by Rs 7 a kg across all varieties since January and Rs 2-3 a kg in March alone.

IPMA asks for softer loans for making technology leap in Paper sector

IPMA requested for levy of a concessional / merit rate of duty on paper and paperboard under the new GST regime. The Joint Secretary was also apprised of the high cost of installing equipment / systems for meeting the revised environmental norms / standards, and it was suggested that there should be some facility of concessional loans for this investment.

The global paper packaging market was USD 213.8 billion in 2014 and is estimated to reach USD 306.73 billion by 2020 growing at a CAGR of 6.2%. Of the paper packaging market, paperboard is estimated to be the fastest growing market with a forecasted growth rate of 7.5% during the period 2014-2020. Moreover, it also leads the market having a share of 35% making it the point of focus for the Suppliers. With a turnover of USD 24.6 billion and a growth rate of 13% to 15% annually, the Indian packaging industry is expected to reach USD 32 billion by 2020 Packaging has an annual global turnover of about USD 550 billion, and India's share is about USD 16.5 billion per annum.
